This week , Emma will learn about the continents. We will discuss lines of latitude and longitude. We’ll discuss hemispheres. She’ll be required to learn the names of the 7 continents and where they are on the map. Here’s our plan for the week:
- Read Latitude & Longitude.
- Talk about hemispheres and lines of latitude/longitude.
- Watch latitude/longitude video on You Tube (Latitude, Longitude, and Time Zones)
- Complete notebooking activity.
- Use the atlas to practice longitude/latitude/hemisphere information.
- Read Earth’s Continents.
- Learn ‘continents/oceans’ song.
- Complete ‘continents’ book from Enchanted Learning (must be member).
- Complete ‘continents’ map activity from Enchanted Learning (must be member).
- Match continent cutouts to world map.
- Play game online (GeoSpy @ National Geographic Kids)
- Watch continents video on YouTube.
- Review the continents/oceans song.
- Match the continent cutouts to the world map.
- Complete ‘Our Father’s World’ pages 37-40.
- Play ‘continent hop’ from Spell Out Loud.
- Watch continents/oceans video on YouTube.
- Review the continents/oceans song.
- Play the matching game.
- Play continent hop.
- Finish any assignments not completed this week.
- Map quiz.
- Song review.
- Make a cookie dough map. We will use two tubes of cookie dough. We will roll one flat, bake it, and ice it blue (oceans). We will roll the other tube flat and cut out (the best we can) the shapes of the continents, bake them, ice them green/brown, and place them on our map base (oceans). I will post pictures when we’re complete it.
To coordinate with this lesson and next week’s (about oceans), Emma and I will be reading/notebooking Nim’s Island. I will post my plans for this unit later. Also, for science, she will be learning about insects this week (as they can be found on 6 of the 7 continents) and ocean animals next week. I will also post plans on those topics soon.
